West of England Tumblers – Page 33 – Purebred PIGEON

Breed of the Issue - West of England Tumblers

Mr.West –

JayTurner

By Bill Henderson

I

n the fifty year history of the NWOETC, there are many

breeders that could be given the moniker of “Mr. West.”

In the early years, the names of James Krebaum, Chuck

Zeller and Jim Bishop, could easily fit the title. In more recent

years, breeders such as Terry Brechbill, Matt Matuska, Tony

Cardoza, Peter Tapia and certainly Bob Christman are all

worthy of the distinction – but none more so than my good

buddy, Jay Turner.

No one loves the West hobby more than Jay and he has

been a tireless supporter of the breed and the NWOETC. He

has held numerous club offices and is constantly trying to

promote West wherever he can. Jay is always willing to drive

to a show and support the West entry and is always looking

for a way to make the hobby better. He has an unbelievable

show record at National and Regional meets all over the

country and has accumulated more Master Breeder points

than any other member and by a huge majority. However, Jay

is very generous and has shared top birds with breeders, both

new and established, in an effort to further the breed. He

One of Jay Turner’s many Champion Wests - 2015 NYBS, Red Self Hen

was instrumental in the idea of this anniversary issue

becoming a reality.

Jay and I made our first travel adventure over

twenty years ago and we were laughing within ten

minutes of the trip. Since that time, we have traveled

countless miles together going to shows all across

the country, literally from one coast to the other. You

cannot spend as much time with someone as I have

with Jay and not be aware of his true nature. Jay loves

the pigeon hobby; it is a true passion of his and the

West of England Tumbler is the breed he is the most

passionate about.

The West breed is one of the most enjoyable

there is within the hobby. Competitive shows, good

parenting and a multitude of rich colors make it one

of the most attractive breeds for anyone to consider.

If you think you might be interested in it, just look up

my buddy Jay and you will quickly realize why I call

him Mr. West.•
