30 – Purebred PIGEON J ohn D e C arlo J r . – the J udge One of the necessary attractions to draw exhibitors is a first class judge. John DeCarlo Jr. handled the evaluating chores and did a splendid job. A white Fantail exhibited by the Messerschmidt family was John’s choice for Best of Show. A lovely conditioned specimen that showed proudly from the minute it was put in the judging pen. Our LAPC President Drew Lobenstein had Reserve Champion with another of his first class Frillbacks. Chuck Brandt had second reserve with a sensational red splash English Trumpeter. The Trumpeters had the larg- est entry with some 75 birds in competition. T om M onahan L auded F or O utstanding P.R. E fforts Since the entry is small and the competition light a lot of emphasis is put on making the show a display of the many breeds in the world of pigeons. Tom Monahan proved to be a main attraction with a natural ability to capture the public’s attention by using a tame Indian Fantail that clung to his arm. It wasn’t long before the young children were asking to pet the tame bird. Tom obliged and out came the cameras from the children’s parents and soon the children had a souvenir photograph of an Indian Fantail on their arm. One little five-year old girl was heard to exclaim, “The pigeons were my favorite thing at the fair.” In addition to Tom breeders Clint Messerschmidt, Kathie Johnson, Launi Nolan and Bob Nolan could be heard answer- ing questions like, “Why do they have feathers on their feet. L.A.P.C. I nformation B ooth Thanks to the work of Jim Symington the Los Angeles Pi- geon Club had an information table set up with flyers, posters, signs and sample LAPC bulletins. These items, Jim passed out liberally. As for colorful decorations our recording secretary Kathie Johnson had four of her striking posters scattered around the show hall.. One was positioned outside the main entrance door to bring the people into the building and the rest in conspicuous places around the show room. The fair personnel were most accommodating. They provided transportation via golf carts for the fanciers from the exhibitor parking lot to the show hall for all three days. Plus prize money of $7.00 for a first, $6.00 for a second, and Bobby Perrenoud’s spangle English Trumpeter spangle project
