Purebred Pigeon Sept/October 2025
GIANT HOMER – Page 22 – Purebred PIGEON Breed of the Issue - AMERICAN GIANT HOMER from me and they did quite well. I just got a text of a very happy junior from Crow Wing County Fair holding a purple Grand Champion ribbon, thanking me for the quality birds. When I give them away, I always encourage them to call or text me if they have any questions about raising them. I also emphasize that when and if they are no longer interested, I will take them back. Throughout the years, I have also picked up breeding and raising tips from a few juniors, like how they raised six youngsters with their mom and dad’s chickens! I didn’t have very much luck when I tried. I questioned one that was feeding their pigeons chicken feed; I now use it in my own mix. When asked how they tame them down so well, many re- sponded, “by holding, squeezing and hugging them.” You can do that with a Giant Homer. I was a community loft guy, but then I met a junior that used his 4H rabbit cage and raised a bunch of birds. I now will use any pen I can get my hands on! We have to keep growing our hobby by introducing it to our youth. They may take up the hobby themselves; and they may step away briefly as they grow up, only to return to it with their own children, like I did. Yours in the hobby, Larry Wilmes•
