Purebred Pigeon SepOct 2024

32 – Purebred PIGEON It’s been Twenty-Three Years and Six Months since I wrote an “Almondated!” Column, but here goes… I received my July/August 2024 copy of Purebred Pigeon Magazine yesterday, the Modena breed of the issue and started reading the “in this issues” topics. Generally, I look first at the names of Article Authors to see if there are any that I know, to read those first, to gauge if they did a good job or not (Tom Moss, Rick Barker, Jim Johnson, Cam Dantana- gan… smile!). But as I was doing so, I saw a non-mentioned Author’s Ar- ticle, “My experience with breeding Magnani’s”. Well now… Magnani is Almonds, and being that I’m “Al- mondated!”, You know what I read first… and eagerly!! Turns out the author’s name is Dennis Meyer, whom I don’t know, and he hails from Wisconsin. I really, really enjoyed Dennis’ article, and reading his story as it went along! The pictures in your advertisement, Dennis, are stunningly beautiful, by the way! As I read his article, Dennis hit on the not always advisable Magnani to Magnani pairings, because of some offspring son’s having vision difficulties, low thrive ability issues and some just outright blindness, all of which is accurate and correct. But he also mentioned that “some” of these homozygous Magnani, Homozygous Almond cock bird offspring will have minimal eye abnormalities and good thrive ability and will breed just fine! This is also true, and I breed from about a half dozen of these Homozygous St’s myself! Dennis then came to the best pairing for a Mag, for an Almond; Bronze Schietti, Bronze being the key! Schietti meaning “pure color,” meaning no white, I assume. Dennis then mentions that he is often asked “What do you breed a Magnani to?” His answer is a really good answer; Bronze Schietti-Bronze!! To take this article from Magnani’s to Almond, Kite Bronze, Tumbler Kite Bronze, to be more precise! What makes the best colored mag? Stipper, T-Pattern, Heterozygous Recessive Red, Bronze-Bronze Schietti, Homozygous of course, and Homozygous Dirty helps too! For the “Classic Almond” coloration this is it, Heterozygous Stipper, Homozygous T-Pattern, Heterozygous Reces- sive Red, Homozygous Tumbler Kite Bronze, Homozygous Dirty. There could be some other Dark- ening Modifiers, Cruddies, Genes in the make up of that Perfect Almond that we haven’t identified, yet. In any case, Magnanis or Almond, whatever your Cup of Tea, (do you use almond milk in that?), it is the Almondated#1 2024 – PurebredPigeon By Ken Davis One of My Proper “Classic Colored” Kite Hen to “Standard Classically Colored” Almond Cock Bird Pairings.
