24 – Purebred PIGEON Back totheSource– MiddleEasternPigeonClub’s Grand Journey By Natalia Bogado The Middle East has always struck us as an exotic region rich in heritage, contrasts, flavors, passion and wonder, and this makes no exception when it comes to the pigeon side of it. In the cradle of domestic pigeon keeping, each ethnic group has been adding their own preferred spice to their birds’ genetic broth over the centuries, leading to an unparalleled diversification of birds with remark- ably defined traits but with intact flight abilities. Not even specialist voice breeds are flightless. Birds belonged to the skies and in some areas people be- gan to find entertainment in their flock mixing with their neighbors’– a skirmish that offered some of the most visually impactful scenes ever seen in the pi- geon hobby. Not even in the vastness of the internet of today are these unique “war” birds under risk of getting lost in the crowd, their unusual proportions or the layered jewelry they wear make a sight that even the most unripe pigeon enthusiast immediately incorporates in their mind as something unmistak- ably Middle Eastern. Many of these stunning birds have already made it across the Atlantic. Nowadays, more than ever, several waves of importation have been hap- pening by the hands of the very same people who keep precious childhood memories around them. Many first generation imports are still alive today and even if they are not the top representatives of A good case of dissimilar representation in literature is seen in the Egyptian Ghozar family.
