18 – Purebred PIGEON Article and photos by by Colton Friedel The Transylvanian Double Crested Tumbler, sometimes called Siebenburger Double Crested Tumbler, is one of the sweetest pigeon breeds you will ever raise. Don’t let the mouth- ful of a name stop you, this little bird will entrap you and make you fall in love. Of Romanian descent from the 19th century, the Tran- sylvanian hasn’t changed too much over the years. They are a medium-sized breed that comes in a plethora of colors, but the most unique feature of this breed is the two crests. A beak crest which sits round and proud just above the beak and a shell crest. This breed is one of very few that are allowed to have a shell that comes with or without rosettes. There is no preference given other than the breeders’ own. The biggest thing is to make sure they are even. When breeding is concerned, they excel. It is not hard to find a comfortable pen in which to get them to produce so that helps to make them an exceptional breed for juniors or novices to start with. I’ve found that they breed well in everything from individual breeding cages to large open lofts. I tested some of them this year by putting 4 pairs in a medium-sized breeding Transylvanian Double Crested Tumbler
