8 – Purebred PIGEON now draw around 300-350 birds. Attendance has been excellent with 75-100 people turning out. Part of the success is due to a huge feed raffle that we annually give away 30-35 sacks of high quality feed. Leach Feed and Volkmann’s Seed Factory have been major donors with the much needed help from Pomona Feed owner, Kenny Davis. Member Mickey McSurdy was a major contributor with his donations of high quality brand new items which included luggage, George Foreman bar-b-ques, and kitchen appliances. Few people go home empty handed with this array of prizes. S omething F or E veryone We attempt to make it a family affair and offer a great hamburger bar-b-que lunch served by Frank Barrachina and Frank Soto. To be sure everyone has birds to participate with we offer two classes. One for mature, 2025 birds that are either in the molt or just finishing and a second grouping for squeakers (unmolted babies). This does away with the old excuse my birds weren’t ready yet. If you don’t have any mature birds then certainly you have some squeakers. The offering of this class has helped to keep our numbers up. It is not unusual to have 75-100 unmolted babies. For prizes for champions and runners-up in both divisions, we award 50 pound sacks of feed with a value of around $30 each. Lynn Watson, our ticket salesman, annually sells close to a thousand dollars worth of tickets . That coupled with the entry fees covers all our expens- es and assures us that we are not losing money on the show. P arade of C hampions – H ighlight of the S how To close the day, all the breed champions are brought up in both divisions. Quite a display – usually 30-35 mature champions and 10-15 squeaker champions. We use a panel of three judges, where possible fanciers with knowledge of different breeds. Each judge narrowed it down to his favorites and then all three judges come up with a consensus. This year the results were as follows: Squeaker (unmolted) Champion – West of England Tumbler – Matt Matuska Reserve – Swallow – Bill Griebel 3rd – English Trumpeter – Bobby Perrenoud The judges for the unmolted class were: Tony Cardoza, Dick Holmberg and John DeCarlo Sr Mature 2025 Birds Champion – Chinese Owl – Justin Curl Reserve – English Trumpeter – John DeCarlo Sr. 3rd – King – Dennis Rogers 4th – Holle Cropper – Fred Maenpa 5th – Old Dutch Tumbler – Penny Harsen 6th – West of England Tumbler – Javier Gomez The judges for the matures were: Dick Holmberg, Clint Messerschmidt Sr., and Bob Nolan.
