CHINESE OWLS – Page 40 – Purebred PIGEON Breed of the Issue - CHINESE OWLS Grease Quill Gq By Mike Lopez Percentages: 25% quill, 50%, 75% You, the fancier/owner/breeder should take note of the percentage of Gq (approximately). The location is usually along the back edge under the wing. Breed examples: Archangel, Bronze English Trumpeters, Black Chi- nese Owls, any good irridescent pigeon has percentages of grease quill. Color White = Gq - yellowish quills Black = Gq - Black/Grayish Brown = Gq - Brown Whitish The number one benefit is irridescent color points.• Frill & Pantaloon Patterns in Chinese Owls By Mike Lopez The ideal: Chest frill should grow in an oval pattern from wing but to wing butt. The pin pattern should be recorded for further reference (mating, selected breeding, and faults to avoid). Record the pin feather direction on the left of th eneck and on the right. Most faults are on the right. The upper half of the frill should blend into the neck. The lovewer half should grow down and outward making a gap of a horizontal line when in full feather. The Ideal: Pantalloons should grow inward towards the keel bone. The length of pin feather and the number of feathers add up to the puff of the pants. When the lower breast feathers meet with the pants, the pants are pushed down and form the two puffs. When starting out with stock that has no record of this, then counting and recording are a must. A small study of the Chinese Owl’s pin pattern should considered. The beginner often get discouraged with this breed at the end of their breeding season because of Owl’s many faults. The two items I have covered are the first things the beginner will see before banding. Watch for their growth and record the pattern for every young. A C B
