37 – Purebred PIGEON Response to January/February 2026 Editor’s Message By Kandy Baumgardner I enjoyed your “From the Editor” in the November/De- cember issue. I had been telling my sister that we might set a record for the length of time having pigeons, but that won’t happen! Not even close. It is absolutely amazing that a person (Richard Brooks) had pigeons for 96 years, will never top that! At least one of us four sisters has had pigeons since the summer of 1957, so almost 69 years. I was 10 and a sister 9 when we got our first pair; then two younger sisters gradual- ly joined us. Only one of us still has them; my lungs won’t permit it but I help her in her loft by wearing a special mask. Mostly they have been Rollers, but all kinds of other breeds when we were growing up. We were lucky to have a neighbor who would go to New York and bring back lots of different breeds, so we learned a lot from him. The sister who still has them joined us at age 6, so I told her she has to live to be 106 to break the record! But regard- less, we have a life-long love of pigeons, which is very, very special, both the birds themselves and the other people who love them. Thank you for all you do.
